Stephen returns to Bellwold to care for Arthur, the friend he cannot bear to lose. At the Lower Chapel, pilgrims come looking for miracles. Behind a locked door, Stephen hears someone asking for help.

The next morning, a prayer restores Arthur's breathing.

When Stephen returns to the chapel, he finds a captive creature beneath its floor. It is begging to be released. But the town has built its hopes around the miracles, and Arthur has begun to question the gift everyone is so grateful for.

With every plea for more time, helping his friend becomes harder to distinguish from refusing to let him go.
